Kiku Healing Series: 間 Ma — The Space Between Sound and Line
Friday, January 16, 2026 from 6:30PM - 8:30PM at JAMsj

Tickets required, available here.

Begin 2026 in a spirit of healing, intention, and community. This special sound bath invites participants to explore the Japanese concept of Ma—the meaningful spaces between sound, line, and breath. The session includes a gentle, guided doodling practice led by artist Yurika Chiba, complemented by rhythmic improvisation from Franco Imperial of San Jose Taiko, whose presence adds a dynamic layer to the sound healer team.

Following the 30-minute guided doodling session, guests will slowly transition to the JAMsj main gallery for a 60-minute restorative sound bath amongst the artifacts and exhibits. To close the experience, we’ll offer an optional reflection circle—a welcoming space where participants may share anything that arose for them, or simply sit in community and quiet presence.

Together, sound, rhythm, and line will create an immersive experience inviting calm, presence, and renewal for the new year.

About the JAMsj 聞く(kiku) Healing Series: 聞く (kiku) is the Japanese word meaning "to listen", but can also mean "to ask". The Kiku Healing Series is a collaboration between JAMsj and local healers to introduce various methods of healing and wellness rooted in Japanese traditions and seeks to engage participants in discourse around healing as individuals and as a community, cultivating deep listening and curiosity about about what is around us and what is within us.

Please note, the Sound Bath portion of this event is about 60 minutes long. If you are unable to lie down for 60 minutes, please indicate in the "Memo" section to request seating.

All proceeds will be used to directly fund the overhead cost of the program, to compensate our healers and for future programming. Tickets required, available here.

間 (Ma) — The Space Between

Ma is a Japanese concept that highlights the meaningful space between objects, sounds, or moments. It is not emptiness, but a pause full of possibility—where reflection, presence, and connection can arise. In this event, we explore Ma as the space between sound, line, and breath, inviting calm, renewal, and the gentle unfolding of what emerges in the “in-between.”
