Volunteer Opportunities
JAMSJ is staffed entirely by volunteers. Anyone who is interested is encouraged to join the team! Volunteering at JAMSJ is a great way to make new friends, be an important part of a vibrant community and provide a valuable legacy for future generations.

Some current openings we have for volunteers include:
  • Grant Writers will keep an eye out on applicable grants and will submit the necessary paperwork.
  • Docents are desperately needed for the new Museum. We will train you on the job!  No experience is necessary and the only characteristics that we require are enthusiasm and dependability. You can choose your hours!
  • Store Managers will oversee the selling of JAMsj products in the Museum onsite and online stores...
  • Website/E-Newsletter Developers will update the JAMsj website and E-Newsletter with relevant information and will create new forms of communicating with the public.
  • Event Planners and Assistants will help plan and coordinate the myriad of events that are held every year including  the Winter Boutique, Fundraising events, book signings, film screenings, festivals and more!
  • Videographers will visually capture oral histories and will create innovative promotional and display material.
  • PR and publicity coordinators, both within and outside the Japanese American community - be a part of a subcommittee to promote JAMSJ activities. Time commitment: meetings as needed and independent work on agreed upon tasks (e.g. creating promotional materials).
  • Local newspaper liaisons - establish contact with specific media representatives in the area and Japanese American newspapers. Forward text and photos to appropriate media organizations as well as follow up with those organizations. Time commitment: as needed to accomplish agreed upon tasks.
  • Administration angels to assist with mailings. Four to six times a year JAMSJ sends out newsletters, raffle tickets, etc. to its 650+ members. Time commitment: 3 hours per mailing.
  • Librarians and archivists to help us make our collections more organized and accessible. The JAMSJ Library is an unique resource for researchers, teachers and interested community members. JAMSJ would like to make it easier to access and keep track of materials. Time commitment: 3 hours per week.
  • Maintenance of building and artifacts. Dusting, vacuuming, etc. of the rooms and collection. Time commitment: One to two hours per month.
  • Construction of exhibit space. Work alongside JAMSJ's Museum Director to create or adjust exhibit space (e.g. painting). Time commitment: dependent on specific project.
  • Care and feeding of computers. JAMSJ presently has an IMAC, Epson printer and Apple Scanner and a PC. TTasks may include regular updating for virus protection, communication with the website provider and addition of memory to existing computers. Time commitment: as needed on agreed upon tasks.
  • Newsletter editor. Four times a year (January, April, July, October) the editor gathers newsworthy articles, creates a master copy of articles and photos and delivers the master to the printer. Time commitment: 12 hours per newsletter.
  • Database Manager. Transfer a database of JAMSJ members and supporting families to the JAMSJ PC and periodically print out labels for mailings (4 to 6 times a year). Time commitment: 2 hours to create the database and transfer data; 1 hour per set of labels.

  • If you would like to give a little of your time to JAMSJ, there are many ways to help. Call us at (408) 294-3138 or email mail@jamsj.org to see what opportunities we have that would suit your schedule and interests.
